Named Twice Before It Stuck
Before it was New Carlisle, this was Bourissa Hill, named for the Potawatomi landowner who held the ground. Gymnast and acrobat Richard Risley Carlisle bought the 160 acres in 1835 and renamed the settlement; three decades later, in 1866, New Carlisle incorporated as a town, with flour mills and sawmills among its earliest industries.
Drainage Legacy of the Mill Era
New Carlisle's earliest economy ran on flour mills and sawmills, industries that depended on managing water rather than avoiding it -- an apt backdrop for a town where basement and foundation drainage still has to account for how the surrounding land handles moisture, especially in the older sections built up before the 1866 incorporation.
