A Depot Town That Never Incorporated
Granger's identity runs through two townships instead of one city hall. The community began in 1883 as a rail depot named for the Grangers farmers' organization, and despite periodic talk of incorporating, it has stayed unincorporated across Clay and Harris townships, growing to a 2020 population of 30,337.
Water Table Varies by Township
Because Granger grew outward from an 1883 depot across two full townships rather than from a single platted downtown, basement and foundation drainage conditions vary widely by subdivision and build era -- older lots near the historic depot area handle water differently than the newer Clay and Harris township developments that have filled in around them.
